Canon EOS M3 vs M10

Canon EOS M3 vs M10 – Detailed Comparison

Hello there! So, today we will be discussing and comparing two Entry-Level mirrorless cameras; the Canon EOS M3 vs M10.

So, first off, both these cameras are made by the same manufacturers – Canon and are even in the same series. Therefore, as you probably would expect, they both have quite some things in common.

These two cameras, which were released in the same year, have the same video resolution and, like we have already mentioned, are both mirrorless and Entry-Level cameras.

Now, mirrorless cameras are cameras that do not have optical viewfinders, and as a result, they have no use for reflex mirrors.

[The cameras that come with optical viewfinders are called digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras, also known as mirrored cameras.]

Entry-Level cameras, however, are cameras made primarily for beginners and amateur photographers. Compared to Pro-Cameras, Entry-Level cameras are made easier to use, and they are largely more affordable.

These are the cameras you would love to get if you are new in the photography world. Or perhaps you are just looking for a camera to take on a vacation or an outing.

Well, if you stick with us all the way to the end, we will be showing you all the similarities and differences between these two Entry-Level mirrorless cameras made by Canon.

Canon EOS M3 vs M10 –Comparison Overview

All right, so, in this section, we will be giving you a quick run-through of the Canon EOS M3 vs M10 comparison. Here, we will be giving you bits of everything we will be extensively talking about in this article.

So, first of all, these two cameras, as you will see in this article, have a lot in common.

Well, they are both made by the same company, are both mirrorless cameras, and are both Entry-Level. So, yeah, what do you expect? Lol!

Both the M3 and the M10 were released in the same year, eight months apart.

The Canon EOS m3 was announced on the 6th of February, 2015, while the M10 was announced on the 12th of October that same year.

One would expect that since the M10 was released a couple of months after the M3, there would be a boatload of improvements on the M3 in the M10. Well, that was not exactly the case.

As a matter of fact, the M3, as you will be seeing in this article, happens to slightly edge the M10 in quite some areas; especially in the area of features.

This is because the M10 was primarily made as a budget friendly version, while the M3 is more a professional (but still Entry-Level) camera.

Which camera offers more value for money?

The Canon EOS M3 offers more value for money than the M10, so it is understandable that it is more expensive. However, that does not mean that the M10 does not have some features that the M3 lacks.

Canon EOS M3

Canon EOS M10

If you will be using your camera for video and audio recordings, then we suggest you go for this. It comes with a port for a microphone, while the M10 does not. If you are looking for a camera to use on a long trek or hike, then we recommend this. It is a lot lighter than the M3, so, you surely would not mind having it in your hand for long periods of time.
If you will be doing a lot of flash photography with your camera, then we recommend this. It has a a hot shoe which allows you to attach an external flash and get even better lighting. The M10, on the other hand, does not come with this feature. If you will be doing a lot of continuous shooting with your camera, then this is the one for you. The m10 allows more frames per second than the M3, which means it is quite faster for continuous shooting.
If you want more colorful pictures, this is the one for you. The M3 has more color depth than the M10. If you are looking for a more budget friendly camera, we suggest that you go for this. It is a more affordable option than the M3.

Canon EOS M3 vs M10 – Common Features

The features Canon EOS M3 and M10 have in common includes the following:

i. ISO

ii. Wireless connection

iii. Face detection focus

iv. Touch screen

v. Built-in flash

vi. Articulating screen

Let’s dive deeper into these features…

i. ISO

So, first off is the ISO. The ISO, in simple terms, is what determines how bright your pictures are, and also how much noise will be in your pictures.

So, in essence, the higher the ISO, the brighter the image; and conversely, the lower the ISO, the darker the image.

However, if your ISO is set too high, there is a much higher possibility of your images having too much noise.

Now, both the Canon EOS M3 and M10 have the same ISO range – 100 to 12800. Also, they are both expandable to 25600.

What this means is that when it comes to picture brightness, these two cameras will be giving you pretty much the same result – of course, this is still subject to how you set it.

ii. Wireless Connection

This feature is one that makes transferring of images and videos really easy. When connected via a WiFi network, you can easily upload your photos or videos to Facebook or YouTube straight from your camera.

And well, both the Canon EOS M3 and the M10 have this feature. This further means that data can easily be exchanged between any of these cameras and other Canon cameras that also have this feature.

Also, both these cameras come with the near field communication (NFC) technology.

This is basically a feature that works hand in hand with the wireless connection feature.

It enables you connect your camera with nearby compatible devices, and do easy and quick transfer of files.

iii. Face Detection Focus

The face detection focus is one feature that has come to be really important in cameras, especially for portraits.

Why is it that important? Well, because the face detection focus helps detect the human faces in the frame, and then makes the camera focus on them.

This feature makes the human faces come out sharper, and with more detail. So, you see why they are great for portraits, don’t you?

Furthermore, this is a feature you can find in both the Canon EOS M3 and and the Canon EOS M10, which means that your portraits on these cameras will be coming out pretty nice and sharp.

iv. Touch Screen

The touch screen feature allows you easy control of your camera.

Being able to control your camera functions just by touching your screen makes using your camera a whole lot easier for you.

Therefore, coming with this touch screen feature, both the
Canon EOS M3 and the M10 are sure to guarantee you that ease of use.

v. Built-in Flash

Canon makes both the Canon EOS M3 and M10 with built-in flash. This flash is great especially for pictures in the dark.

You know, you will not always have the luxury of having the perfect lighting in your shooting location.

So, if this is your case, you would find the built-in flash really important. With this, your pictures can still come out bright even in areas with low light.

vi. Articulating Screen

The articulating screen (otherwise called flip screen) is a type of rotating screen that comes with some cameras. This screen enables you to have a good view while you take pictures at difficult angles.

Also, an articulating screen makes taking selfies easier and even more fun. So, you can easily flip the screen to face you as you take amazing pictures of yourself, by yourself.

So, if you are looking for this flip screen in a camera, you will be satisfied with either the M3 or the M10.

Canon EOS M3 vs M10 – Unique Features

The Canon EOS M3 and M10 cameras come with the following unique features…

i. External flash hot shoe

ii. Microphone jack

iii. Auto exposure bracketing

iv. Viewfinder

Let’s discuss these distinct features in detail…

External Flash Hot Shoe

This is a feature that allows you to connect an external flash to your camera. The external flash shoe is unique to just the Canon EOS M3.

Though both these cameras have built-in flashes, sometimes, in some conditions, you might need an external flash to give better results.

This external flash hot shoe, therefore, means that, you have an option of getting an external flash and attaching it to your EOS M3 – which will be great for flash photography. However, you do not have that option with the M10.

Microphone Jack

In pitting the Canon EOS M3 vs M10, this is one feature that gets the attention of a lot of photographers and camera lovers.

Cameras are not only used to capture images, as you must know; they are also used to record videos. And some of these video recordings might require a high audio quality, too.

Now, with a microphone jack, you can, of course, connect an external mic to your camera and get better audio quality.

Anyway, this is a feature unique to the Canon EOS M3. This invariably means, as we mentioned earlier, that if you would need to do audio recordings with your camera, the M3 would be a better option, simply because of this feature.

Auto Exposure Bracketing

So, the auto exposure bracketing is a feature that allows you, the photographer, to take a number of different shots with just one click, each one having different settings.

For example, you get the rare opportunity of taking a picture of the president while he is addressing a crowd, but the lighting isn’t so good.

Well, you know you won’t get too many chances to get a good shot. So, your one take has to be a really good take.

Now, instead of taking different shots, in attempts to find the most appropriate exposure setting for the picture (by this time, the president would have been long departed), this feature makes your job easier and more convenient.

The auto exposure bracketing, when set, helps you get different takes of that image, with just one shot.

This means that with just one click, your camera takes a couple of shots of the president, each with different exposure settings.

Furthermore, the auto exposure bracketing is really useful when you do not have the luxury of the perfect lighting conditions that you need.

This is a feature unique only to the Canon EOS M3.

Viewfinder

Remember we mentioned earlier that both the Canon EOS M3 vs M10 are mirrorless cameras, which means that they both do not have optical viewfinders.

Well, there is another type of viewfinders that mirrorless cameras could come with – electronic viewfinders.

An electronic viewfinder is a type of camera viewfinder that allows the photographer view what is being captured by his camera lens, in a smaller display.

Also, this viewfinder gives you a one hundred per cent coverage of your eventual image.

One major advantage of the electronic viewfinder over the optical viewfinder is the fact that while the optical viewfinder cannot be used while shooting a video, the electronic viewfinder can be used very easily.

However, with electronic viewfinders, there is usually a pretty obvious lag between what you see in your viewfinder and actual movements in the location.

Anyway, the electronic viewfinder feature is not present in all mirrorless cameras; like the M3 and the M10.

But then, with the Canon EOS M3, you have the option of attaching an external electronic viewfinder.

However, the Canon EOS M10, on the other hand, neither comes with a viewfinder, nor does it give you an option of attaching an external one.

Canon EOS M3 vs M10 – Unique Pros

The Canon EOS M3 vs M10 comparison has seen these two cameras go head to head on so many grounds.

While we have seen that they both have quite some features that are quite similar or same, we have also seen that each of them also has features unique to them.

Anyway, in this section, we will be talking about the unique pros of the Canon EOS M3 vs M10.

Unique Pros Of the Canon EOS M3 — Canon EOS M3 vs M10

Which Offers better Lighting: M3 or M10?

The Canon EOS M3 offers better lighting because it comes with an external flash hot shoe. What this means is that, aside the lighting you could get from the flash that comes with both these cameras, the M3 does one better by offering you an option of attaching an external flash.

With this option, you are able to get better picture quality even in places with low light, just by getting an external flash and attaching to your M3. Unfortunately, this is not available with the M10.

Which has better Audio Quality: M3 or M10?

The Canon EOS M3 offers better audio quality than the M10 and many other cameras out there because it is equipped with a mic input. Cameras are not only used for capturing still images, but also for video and audio recordings.

Therefore, if you need a camera for the latter, you would sometimes need an external microphone to help you with good quality audio.

Well, apparently, not every camera can guarantee you this superb quality audio, especially in noisy locations.

What this means is that not every camera has a microphone jack (or port).

So, of these two cameras, only the Canon EOS M3 has this microphone port.

Therefore, with the M3 you will be able to get better audio quality than the M10 and many other cameras out there.

Which is more Convenient: M3 or M10?

The Canon EOS M3 has the auto exposure bracketing feature, while the Canon EOS M10 does not. This means that the M3 will be more convenient to shoot with compared to the M10. This is because the auto exposure bracketing, when set, allows you capture an image once, but have different takes of that image, each take with a different exposure setting.

So, basically, the M3 saves you the stress of taking a picture, checking, adjusting the settings, and taking again.

With the auto exposure bracketing, you can get the same (or even better) result, this time with even more ease.

Which Produces better Video Quality: M3 or M10

Though both these cameras are mirrorless, and therefore, have no optical viewfinder, the Canon EOS M3 is the only one of the two cameras with an option for a different type of viewfinder – an electronic viewfinder.

This electronic viewfinder, amongst other things, is great for when you want to record videos.

Which has a Longer-lasting Battery: M3 or M10?

The M3 is a good battery saver. Its battery last a little longer than it would have without an electronic viewfinder.

Unique Pros of the Canon EOS M10 — Canon EOS M3 vs M10

Which is Lighter: M3 or M10?

The Canon EOS M10 is lighter than the M3. It is one very sleek and slim camera, measuring 1.4 inches in width. Also, weighing 13 ounces, this is one really lightweight camera.

These are some of the reasons we said that the M10 is a good camera for you if you will be needing to take your camera with you on hikes. They are really easy to carry around.

Which is more Affordable: M3 or M10?

The Canon EOS M10 is a pretty affordable camera. If on a budget, and are looking for a camera that won’t cause so much harm to your pocket, then the M10 is one you should consider.

Canon EOS M3 vs M10 – Unique Cons

Unique Cons Of The Canon EOS M3

What is the major disadvantage of the M3?

The major disadvantage of using the M3 is its sensor pixel area. With a sensor pixel area of 13.84 micrometer square, the Canon EOS M3 has a not very large sensor pixel area.

As a matter of fact, compared to the M10, the M3 has about a 33 per cent smaller pixel area available. And usually, the smaller the sensor pixel area, the smaller the resolutions. And ultimately, the picture quality you get from the camera won’t be as good as if the pixel area was larger.

Unique Cons Of The Canon EOS M10

What are the Unique Disadvantage of Getting the M10?

The major feature the M10 lacks is external flash shoe. In conditions where there isn’t very good lighting, the flash your camera comes with might not always give you the best quality you need.

In cases like this, you need an external flash to help you with better lighting.

Well, this is one thing the Canon EOS M10, unfortunately, cannot give you. It has no hot shoe on which you can mount an external flash, so, you are stuck with the built-in flash.

Another drawback of the M10 is its poor audio quality. Without a microphone jack, the M10 makes it difficult for you to get clear and good quality audio, especially if there is a lot of noise where you are shooting.

So, if you need a camera for audio recordings, the Canon EOS M10, sadly, might not be a great pick.

Canon EOS m3

Canon EOS m10

This is a pretty functional camera; good picture quality and pretty convenient, too. We love this one because it is lightweight, and easy to carry around. Great for hikes, travels, road trips, and all that.
Canon needs to improve on the battery of this. 250 shots per full charge is not something that should be said of a Canon camera. Same as the m3, though only slightly better; very slightly. Anyway, Canon could have and should have done a lot better with the battery of this camera.
The ISO also was not very impressive on this one. Same here.
This is, however, a great flash photography camera; also great for video recording. Not a very amazing flash photography camera, but will do well with video recording in quiet places.

Canon EOS M3 vs M10 — FAQs

Is Canon EOS M10 Good for Vlogging?

The Canon EOS M10 is a good camera for vlogging, since it’s a fast point-and-shoot hybrid CMOS device. The camera is equipped with an LCD that can be rotated in any direction.

Also, the M10 is quite light and compact, which are essentials for a good vlogging camera. With its great articulating screen and connectivity, high-quality audio and video can be produced. In fact, the M10 ticks all the boxes for a great vlogging camera.

Is Canon EOS M10 a DSLR?

The Canon EOS M10 is not a DSLR. But then, the image quality it produces can rival that of the Canon EOS 100D DSLR. In fact, it is designed with the same 18 MP APS-C sensor and ISO range with the Canon EOS 100D DSLR.

A DSLR has an in-built mirror that reflects light passing through the lens, so users can see when shooting. Also because of the minimal power that the optical viewfinder consumes, the battery life of a DSLR camera is extended.

Does the Canon EOS M10 have a Mic Input?

The Canon EOS M10 camera does not have a mic input jack, unlike the M2. But this is not surprising since the camera does not have a hot shoe for mounting an external microphone. For vlogging, a built-in camera microphone is not good enough because audio quality is just as important as video quality in vlogging.

So, before the Canon EOS M10 camera can be used for vlogging, extra cash has to be spent on getting a microphone. Consider this as a long-term investment because a mic input, if used properly, can last for a long time.

When did the Canon M3 Come Out?

On August 2015, Canon announced that it would be releasing the M3 camera in two months time. During its launching in the United States, only the body of the Canon EOS M3 camera was sold at about $679.99, while the complete kit cost $799.99, which included the EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens.

How do I Connect My Canon EOS M10 to My iPhone?

To connect the Canon EOS M10 to an iPhone, the Camera Connect app has to be downloaded from Apple Store and installed. Next, download and install another app called EOS Remote from Google Play Store or Apple Store. After that, launch the app and set it up.

During the setup, a drop-down window will appear for the user to register the name of the camera. This name will be displayed on the target device’s screen when a Wi-Fi connection is created. Remember to double-check the settings before saving it.

Does Canon EOS M10 have Bluetooth?

The Canon EOS M10 does not have a Bluetooth feature. So, to transfer files to another camera or computer device, the only available option is via Wi-Fi connection or NFC. Note that there are some cameras that come with Bluetooth connectivity while others support Bluetooth connections to Android and iOS devices.

Also, a camera that supports Bluetooth connection can only support a file transfer under 24 MB to the same generation camera.
