Comparison Overview — Canon EOS M3 vs Sony a6000

While the Sony a6000 was announced by Sony on the 23rd of April, 2014, the Canon EOS M3 was announced by Canon on the 6th of February, 2015.

And despite being made by two different companies, and released about a year apart, these two cameras have quite a number of similarities.

Now, speaking of the producers of these two cameras – Canon and Sony. Of course, these are familiar names in the tech world; both are particularly big players in the camera industry.

Having each been around for more than 7 decades, both these companies have indeed built big legacies and brand names for themselves.

And if you are one of the many customers who are very particular about brand names when it comes to getting cameras, we sure can say with either of these brands, you are safe.

Now, apart from both these cameras being mirrorless, they also each have a wireless connection, a 3-inch articulating screen, in-built flash and external flash hot shoe, face detection focus, and many other similar features you will be discovering in this article.

However, in the Canon EOS M3 vs Sony a6000 battle, both these cameras edge out each other in a few areas.

The M3 has a microphone port and a touch screen, while the a6000 has neither.

On the other hand, while the a6000 comes with an in-built electronic viewfinder, the EOS M3 does not. Also, the a6000 boasts of a longer lasting battery than the EOS M3.

Now, both these cameras sure do offer sufficient value to users. But we do think that the Sony a6000 has a better price-value ratio.

And we say this because, even though it is a tight battle between these cameras when it comes to features, the a6000 is the more affordable one.

Anyway, if you stick with us, you will find even more details on the Canon EOS M3 vs Sony a6000 comparison. Let’s get to it.

Canon EOS M3

Sony a6000

If perhaps you are a photojournalist and you would need to make video and audio recordings in noisy places, then this is the camera for you.

Unlike the Sony a6000, this camera comes with a microphone jack that permits you to connect an external microphone and get better sound quality.
If you are, say, a sports photographer, you know you would need to do a lot of continuous shooting. Therefore, we recommend this camera for you.

This has a burst mode of 11.0 frames per second, and thus, offers you a continuous shooting of close to three times that of the Canon EOS M3.
If you would be taking a lot of selfies with your camera, then this is the camera you need.

The Canon EOS M3 comes with an articulating screen, which tilts 180 degrees upward, and 45 degrees downward. This, therefore, makes it easy for you to take selfies, or capture images form difficult angles.
If your need for a camera involves a lot of light sensitivity and exposure, then this is the camera for you.

The Sony a6000 has a one hundred per cent higher maximum ISO than the Canon EOS M3, so, you can see what we mean.

Common Features — Canon EOS M3 Vs Sony a6000

The Canon EOS M3 and Sony a6000 have the following features in common…

i. Mirrorless

ii. Wireless connection

iii. In-built flash

iv. External Flash Hot Shoe

v. Auto exposure bracketing

vi. Articulating Screen

vii. RAW support

viii. Face detection focus

ix. Remote controlling

x. HDMI output

Let’s take a closer look at each of them…

Mirrorless

Unlike Digital Single-Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras which have reflex designs and, thus, need mirrors to send images through the lens and to the optical viewfinder, the mirrorless cameras do not.

Mirrorless cameras do not come with optical viewfinders because they literally do not have use for them.

These cameras, unlike the DSLR cameras, have no reflex design and, thus – as you would have guessed – have no mirrors.

Anyway, mirrorless cameras have the option of coming with electronic viewfinders – though some of them come with none at all.

Now, for example, the Sony a6000 comes with an electronic viewfinder, but the EOS M3 does not; it only gives you an option to attach an external viewfinder.

Wireless Connection

In the Canon EOS M3 vs Sony a6000 comparison, this is easily one major point of convergence.

Both these cameras come with a feature that allows you to easily upload photos and videos to the internet, just by connecting to a WiFi network.

Also, they help you transfer files pretty easily to other compatible devices using the NFC feature.

In-Built Flash

The Canon EOS M3 and the Sony a6000 each come with an in-built flash. This flash makes it easy for you to take photos in areas with little or no light.

If you need a camera that will give you bright images even in dark places, then either of these cameras will do.

However, there are some conditions where an in-built flash won’t give you the best of results, this leads us to our next common feature.

External Flash Hot Shoe

Like we said, in some conditions, the in-built flash won’t give you the best of results. In such conditions, you need an external flash.

Luckily, each of these cameras comes with a hot shoe that allows you to connect an external flash and get better lighting for your images.

Auto Exposure Bracketing

Automatic exposure bracketing is one feature that allows you to take photos in really tough conditions.

What this feature does is that it gives you a couple of different takes of one image.

For example, with the auto exposure bracketing set, you could capture an image just once, and your camera would show you that image in overexposed, normally exposed, and underexposed, conditions.

This saves you a whole lot of stress, especially when you don’t have the lighting conditions that you desire. Well, luckily, both these cameras come with this feature, great, isn’t it?

Articulating Screen

An articulating screen is a type of tilting screen that helps you take pictures from difficult angles and positions.

Being able to tilt your screen to different angles helps you take pictures from points where you naturally would not have been able to take from.

Both the Canon EOS M3 and the Sony a6000 come with flexible screens.

RAW Support

This is a feature that allows you retain your files in their raw forms – uncompressed and untouched.

Professional photographers usually love their files in the rawest form, so, they can edit from the very scratch until they are satisfied with the image.

Well, if you fall into this category, then you would be satisfied with either of these cameras; both of them come with this RAW support feature.

Face Detection Focus

This is a feature that makes your camera able to detect the human faces in your frame and focus on them. The face detection focus feature makes your camera really great for portrait photography.

And with both the Canon EOS M3 and the Sony a6000, you can get this feature, and therefore, get great portraits with them.

Remote Controlling

This is a feature that helps you connect your phone to your camera, and thus, control your camera with your smartphone. This makes shooting easier and more convenient.

HDMI Output

Both of these cameras allow you to connect an HDMI cord, which allows you to easily view your photos and videos on a larger screen.

Unique Features — Canon EOS M3 vs Sony a6000

The following are the unique features of the Canon EOS M3 and Sony a6000 digital camera:

i. Microphone jack

ii. Touch screen

iii. Electronic viewfinder

Microphone Jack

With a microphone jack, you can easily connect an external microphone and get superior sound quality for your video and audio recordings.

In some conditions – especially those that require that you make audio recordings in really noisy areas – you need more than your in-built microphone.

Well, this is one point where the M3 edges the a6000. This feature is one you can only get with the Canon EOS M3.

Touch Screen

The touch screen feature allows you to easily access your many camera features.

With this feature, controlling your camera functions is made a lot more convenient.

Well of the two cameras in comparison, i.e., Canon EOS M3 vs Sony a6000, the touch screen feature is one which comes with just the Canon EOS M3.

Electronic Viewfinder

Like we mentioned earlier in this Canon EOS M3 vs Sony a6000 comparison, both these cameras are mirrorless cameras, which means that they both come without optical viewfinders.

Anyway, the Sony a6000 comes with an electronic viewfinder, while the Canon EOS M3 only has the option of attaching an external viewfinder.

Of course, everybody will prefer to have the viewfinder come with the camera instead of having to separately look for one.

Canon EOS M3 vs Sony a6000 – Unique Pros

The following are the unique upsides of the Canon EOS M3 and Sony a6000:

Unique Pros Of The Canon EOS M3

Which Camera has a Touch Screen: Canon EOS M3 or Sony a6000?

The Canon EOS M3, as opposed to the Sony a6000, very easily allows users to control camera functions just by touching the screen. Therefore, in this respect, the EOS M3 is a lot easier to use than the a6000, which does not have a touch screen.

Which has better Audio Quality: Canon EOS M3 or Sony a6000?

The Canon EOS M3 has better audio quality because it comes with a microphone jack.

With the microphone jack that this camera comes with, you can easily connect your external microphone to your camera and get good audio quality. This is particularly good when it is inevitable for you to make your recordings in environments that are not exactly very quiet.

Your external microphone can cancel out the noise in the environment and give you clear and crisp audio.

Which is more Affordable: Canon EOS M3 or Sony a6000?

The Canon EOS M3 is more affordable, but that doesn’t mean it is of lower quality. It offers quite a lot of features cosidering its price.

So, if you are looking for a functional camera which is also pretty budget-friendly, you could maybe check out the vs Sony a6000.

Which is Lighter: Canon EOS M3 or Sony a6000?

The Canon EOS M3 is lighter, as it weighs only 0.81 pounds.

If you are a tourist, you most likely would like a lightweight camera; one that you can carry for long hours taking photos of beautiful scenery, without feeling like you are doing any heavy lifting.

This advantage is what the Canon EOS M3 has over many other cameras of its peers – especially the Sony a6000.

Weighing not even up to a pound, this camera is a good option for you if you need something to take with you on tours, hikes, road trips, and activities of that nature.

Which Produces a Larger JPEG Buffer: Canon EOS M3 or Sony a6000?

When it comes to JPEG Buffer, Canon EOS M3 outshines the Sony a6000.

Now, in plain and simple terms, what your camera buffer feature does is that it holds images before they are transferred to your memory card so that you can continue capturing images in burst mode.

Therefore, what this means is that the smaller your image buffer – regardless of how fast your burst mode is – you are bound to get only a few shots on burst mode before it slows down.

This occurs simply because your buffer will fill up very easily. Now, imagine a world where you have unlimited camera buffer space. That is exactly what you get with the Canon EOS M3.

PS: There are other factors that could make your burst mode run slow only after a few quick shots, and the video below gives you more information on that. Check it out:

Unique Pros Of The Sony a6000

Which Produces Panorama Images: Canon EOS M3 or Sony a6000?

The Sony a6000 is designed to produce panorama images, unlike the Canon EOS M3.This means that a Sony a6000 camera can bring together multiple shots you have taken and make them into a beautiful panorama display.

Which Offers better Framing: Canon EOS M3 or Sony a6000?

Since the Sony a6000 is the only one of these two cameras that comes with an electronic viewfinder, it means that it is the better camera to take pictures with in the sun.

With this camera and its electronic viewfinder, images can still very easily framed, even in the sun.

Also, you can preview your image in your viewfinder, and you have access to information that you normally will not have access to without an electronic viewfinder.

Which Offers a Larger Raw Buffer: Canon EOS M3 or Sony a6000?

Although the Canon EOS M3 edges this camera in the area of JPEG buffer, the Sony a6000 has proven that it is a better camera to take RAW shots with in burst mode.

With the Sony a6000, you can take 22 shots in the RAW format before slowing down. To put this in perspective for you, the Sony a6000 has a RAW buffer that is more than 5 times the size of the Canon EOS M3. Pretty impressive.

Which has a Higher ISO Range:
Canon EOS M3 or Sony a6000?

The Sony a6000 offers you an ISO range of 100 to 25600 – this is expandable to 51200. This is actually a pretty impressive range. To put this in perspective, the Sony a6000 has a hundred per cent higher maximum ISO than the Canon EOS M3.

Well, the ISO is one feature that helps you take really great pictures even in low light. This ISO measures your camera’s sensitivity to light.

Therefore, even when your aperture and shutter speed are not giving you your desired results, your camera’s ISO can always come to save the day.

Basically, it is a great feature that helps you be more creative with your camera and photo shoots.

Anyway, if you do not really understand what the ISO is (and you want to), the video below should help you out. Check it out:

Which Shoots Faster:
Canon EOS M3 or Sony a6000?

Whether on RAW or on JPEG, the Sony a6000 shoots at 11.1 frames per second on burst mode. This number is pretty impressive and, as a matter of fact, almost 3 times that of the Canon EOS M3.

Well, in case you are confused about what this implies, it is pretty easy to grasp.

When you are doing a continuous shooting with your camera, it goes fast, and at some point slows down.

And how fast your camera is able to capture these photos is dependent on a couple of different factors.

Anyway, one of the most important factors is the burst mode of your camera.

Therefore, for example, the Sony a6000 – everything else kept constant – can give you close to 3 times the speed you will get from the Canon EOS M3, in continuous shooting.

Which has better Focal Point:
Canon EOS M3 or Sony a6000?

The Sony a6000 can boast of a pretty impressive 179 focus points – this is 130 more than that of the Canon EOS M3. This means that users will get significantly sharper focus in this sense, from the a6000.

Basically, more focus points equal sharper images, as you will be able to focus on subjects better.

Unique Cons — Canon EOS M3 Vs Sony a6000

Unique Cons Of The Canon EOS M3

The following are the drawbacks peculiar to the Canon EOS M3:

i. No built-in electronic viewfinder

ii. Expensive

iii. Slow burst mode

iv. No UHS Memory Card

v. Low ISO

vi. Fewer focal points

Check out more details below…

No Built-In Electronic Viewfinder

With a viewfinder, you can easily frame your images, even in the sun. Also, you have the option of previewing the image, so as to get a great shot of your subject.

These and more are the advantages you miss out on in the Canon EOS M3, because it does not come with a viewfinder.

If it is any consolation, the EOS M3 has a hot shoe that allows you to attach an external electronic viewfinder.

Anyway, we are pretty sure almost everyone would prefer if their mirrorless cameras came with electronic viewfinders.

Expensive

For some, the Canon EOS M3 happens to be quite on the high side when it comes to price. And this is not exactly a good report for a Semi-Pro camera of this nature.

This is a camera for vloggers, tourists, and the likes; therefore, it is only right that these people are able to afford a camera they need.

Slow Burst Mode

Offering only 4.2 frames per second, the Canon EOS M3 has a pretty slow burst mode.

This means that with this camera, you should not be expecting a very fast continuous shooting.

We were expecting that, with the EOS M3, Canon would have made massive improvements in this area. Unfortunately, it didn’t.

And actually, it gets slightly worse if you are shooting on RAW. In that case, the Canon EOS M3 offers you just 4.0 frames per second.

No UHS Memory Card

So, seeing as the continuous shoot is already slow in itself, one would have thought that Canon would have compensated by making this camera’s burst mode faster in other ways.

Well, seeing as the Canon EOS M3 does not support Ultra High-Speed Memory Cards, you are stuck with regular memory cards. And probably an even slower burst mode. Again, pretty disappointing.

Low ISO

For a Semi-Pro camera released by Canon in 2015, we think that a maximum ISO of 12800 – expandable to 25600 – is not very exciting.

Depending on the exposure or light conditions under which you are shooting, you might need to take photos with pretty high ISOs. And well, apparently, the Canon EOS M3 is pretty limited.

Few Focal Points

49 focus points are really not very exciting for any camera. When you consider that a camera like the Sony a6000 – which was released months before the EOS M3 – can boast of more than 3 times the focus points that the Canon EOS M3 has, it makes it even more disappointing.

Unique Cons Of the Sony a6000

The following are the downsides of the Sony a6000…

i. No touch screen

ii. No microphone jack

No Touch Screen

A camera like this, we thought, should come with an easy access and control of functions.

Therefore, coming without a touch screen did not make many customers happy.

No Microphone Jack

So, say you are a vlogger and you always shoot videos in a quiet room, you might not have many problems with the Sony a6000 not coming with a microphone jack.

However, if, on the other hand, you are a news reporter, and so, need to take video and audio recordings in very noisy places, then you are in some trouble with this camera.

Without an option to connect an external microphone, it is nearly impossible for you to get really good quality audio from you camera – especially in really noisy places.

Canon EOS M3 vs Sony a6000 – Our Take

Canon EOS M3

Sony a6000

Pitting the Canon EOS M3 vs Sony a6000, this is one major thing we notice. Just like virtually every customer out there, we are very unimpressed with the batteries of the Canon EOS M3. We really wish Canon did better with the battery of this, because 250 shots per full charge is pretty disappointing. We are also disappointed with the battery of this camera. Yes, they are better than that of the EOS M3, but Sony could have done a lot better.
Anyway, for vloggers, tourists, vacationists, travelers, this is one camera we can recommend. The Canon EOS M3 is portable, handy, and has a good grip. Therefore, you will enjoy carrying this around and capturing beautiful memories with it. This is not as lightweight as we would have expected, but the Sony a6000 is a good camera for you if you are on a budget. It is an affordable camera, and does not lack so much in features and functions.
Continuous shooting with this can be really frustrating; we wish it was better. But 4 frames per second? Very disappointing. Anyway, with good connectivity, microphone jack, in-built flash and option for an external one, remote controlling, and a good articulating screen, the Canon EOS M3 definitely gets a thumbs up from us. Pretty fast shooting, an in-built electronic viewfinder, good connectivity and remote controlling, pretty high ISO; this is surely a pretty impressive mirrorless camera – especially for its price. The first Canon EOS digital camera known as Canon EOS 650 was released in 1887. Until 1996, when the EOS IX was launched, every EOS camera was fitted with a 35 mm film.

Since 2005, all EOS cameras are equipped with digital image sensors instead of film. In 2012, the Canon EOS M series was introduced, which was the first set of mirrorless full-frame cameras.
