What is a mirrorless camera? So, from the name, you could probably guess that a mirrorless camera is one that does not have mirrors.

Well, you won’t be wrong, but there is more to a mirrorless camera, anyway. And we will be properly explaining all of that under the “common features” section.

Anyway, if you need to make a really quick decision, the next three sections will help you do just that. Let us get to it!

Comparison Overview — Canon EOS M5 vs M50

Like we have mentioned, these cameras belong in the same series, and are obviously produced by the same company.

Canon is a company that has been around for more than 8 decades, and, in these years, has had great influence in the world of photography.

When it comes to cameras, Canon is indeed one of the most trusted brands. This company has been able to win the hearts of photographers and camera enthusiasts with their quality, highly functional, convenient, cameras.

So, knowing this company, you can be confident that we are in for a comparison between two cameras of topmost quality.

Released in September of 2016, the Canon EOS M5 was announced 2 years before its rival – the Canon EOS M50 (February, 2018).

In spite of this fact, these cameras have quite a number of similar features, as you will be finding out in this Canon EOS M5 vs M50 comparison article.

For example, you get the same maximum sensor resolution with both these cameras, and nearly the same speed when shooting on burst mode, too.

However, the M5 slightly edges the M50 in the area of convenience. And we say this because the M5 comes with the Near Field Communication (NFC) feature, while the M50 does not.

If you do not know what exactly this NFC feature is, continue with us on this Canon EOS M5 vs M50 comparison, we will be explaining in full.

Also, you get video stabilization with the M5, but not with the M50. So, we could say that the M5 is the better camera for recording videos.

However, when it comes to creativity, the M50 offers you more than the M5. You are able to record slow-motion videos, and take photos at a maximum ISO that is 100 percent higher than that of the M5. Amazing!

Also, with the M50 – assuming your options are limited to the Canon EOS M5 vs M50 – you will be saving a few bucks. This is why we think it has a slightly better price-value ratio.

You get about the same convenience and functionality from both these cameras. But the M50 will be costing you less, so, yes, it is the camera that will be giving you more value for its price.

Without any further ado, let us dive straight into the main Canon EOS M5 vs M50 comparison. Come with us!

v. Built-in flash

vi. External flash hot shoe

vii. Auto exposure bracketing

viii. Face detection focus

ix. Wi-fi connectivity

Let’s be more explicit on these features…

Mirrorless Camera

Now, one of the major things that differentiate a mirrorless camera from its rival – a Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera – is a feature called the optical viewfinder.

An optical viewfinder is a feature that shows you the exact image which the camera lens is capturing, but in a smaller display than the camera screen.

This kind of viewfinder is exclusive to DSLR cameras (otherwise known as mirrored cameras). And this is because these cameras have a reflex design, and as a result, need an optical viewfinder.

So, in a DSLR, because of that reflex design, light is sent from the lens, through mirrors, and then to the optical viewfinder.

Mirrorless cameras, on the other hand, come with another type of viewfinder – an electronic viewfinder.

An electronic viewfinder shows you a digital image of what your camera’s lens is capturing.

And seeing as mirrorless cameras do not have any reflex design, they send light straight from the lens to the sensor then to the viewfinder – no need for mirrors.

Well, if you still are not clear on what we have said so far, check out this video that explains, in less than 5 minutes, the major distinctions between a DSLR and a mirrorless camera.

Electronic Viewfinder

Now, speaking of electronic viewfinders, an electronic viewfinder is not what makes a camera mirrorless, but it is an indication that the camera is a mirrorless one.

That is, while not every mirrorless camera has an electronic viewfinder, every camera that has an electronic viewfinder is a mirrorless camera.

This feature is pretty essential for good photography; especially if you will be doing a lot of outdoor shoots in very sunny areas.

The electronic viewfinder helps you view the image your camera lens is capturing. And although you can do this with your camera’s LCD screen, the viewfinder helps you better frame those images.

Also, if you are shooting in the sun, it will be really difficult for you to see what is on the LCD screen. As a matter of fact, shooting with just the screen in the sun might very well frustrate you.

So, the electronic viewfinder becomes really useful in such conditions. It also shows you some vital info about your camera – ISO, battery level, histogram, and lots more.

It is a really useful feature, one you will enjoy having in both these cameras – Canon EOS M5 vs M50.

Articulating Screen

We already mentioned briefly about what it is like to shoot using your camera’s screen. So, yeah, perhaps it is not the best to shoot with when the sun is out.

However, seeing as they are articulating screens, the LCD screens of both these cameras – Canon EOS M5 vs M50 – are just great for vlogging and flexible shooting.

An articulating screen – in case you do not know what one is – is a type of flexible screen that can be flipped or tilted to help you capture images conveniently from different angles.

So, while the screen of the EOS M5 is able to only flip out, that of the EOS M50 is able to tilt upward and downward.

As a result of this, it has been a debate that the EOS M5 is the better camera for vloggers than the M50.

To make this more practical below is a video comparing which is the better vlogging camera between the EOS M5 and the EOS M50.

It talks about the other factors that make a camera just apt for vlogging aside its articulating screen. Check it out here!

Touch Screen

Further on screens, a touch screen allows you more convenience in operating your camera.

You are able to easily control its functions. Also, you are saved the stress of having to always find the right buttons.

This is a really great feature – one that comes with both these cameras we are comparing today – Canon EOS M5 vs M50.

In-Built Flash

Now, if you happen to be shooting in an area where lighting is not exactly fantastic, then this is one feature that would prove to be really important.

You can always use your flash without having to bother about improving the lighting situations around.

And depending on the exact lighting conditions, your camera’s in-built flash might just suffice.

External Flash Hot Shoe

So, in a situation where the camera’s in-built flash does not do a great job, you still have another option – an external flash.

You can always enhance your camera’s lighting, and thus, the brightness of your images, by mounting an external flash on the external flash hot shoe.

With an external flash, you have even better lighting, obviously. And you can even get fantastic results from flash photography.

So, you want sharper images in areas of low light? Get an external flash and mount it on your M5 or M50 using the external flash hot shoe!

Auto-Exposure Bracketing

Still on taking photos in difficult lighting conditions, here is another feature that gives great results.

The auto-bracketing feature, when set, allows you to take just one photo and produces 3 or more different exposure settings of that one photo.

So, if you are not sure what exposure setting will give you the best results, instead of trying all your options one after the other, this feature gives you everything all at once.

That is, with just one click of a button, you can get a photo in – for example – normal exposure, underexposed and overexposed.

Among other things, this is a really convenient feature – it makes your work a lot easier.

Face Detection Focus

Now, this feature helps you take fantastic portrait photos with your Canon EOS M5 or EOS M50.

What this does, as you might have guessed, is to detect and focus on the human faces in your camera’s view – that simple.

Wi-Fi Connectivity

The in-built Wi-Fi of these cameras makes it possible for you to connect your camera to a nearby compatible device and then transfer files really easily.

This saves you the stress of having to carry around USB cables. Also, with Wi-Fi, you are even able to transfer files more quickly than you can with cables.

Well, apparently, your camera’s in-built Wi-Fi is good for other things besides transfer of files.

With this, you can also use your connected smartphone as your camera’s screen.

This means that you can use your smartphone to remote control either the Canon EOS M5 or the EOS M50.

You can even shoot using your smartphone. And you can do this with your camera carefully placed meters away.

So, if you, for instance, want to take a family photo – one you are supposed to be in – you will be happy with this feature.

You can place the camera on a tripod, take your position with the rest of the family, and just take as many photos as you desire just by a clicking a button on your smartphone in your palm.

This means that you won’t have to go through the stressful and futile process of going to the camera and back just to get a great family photo. Isn’t that just so cool?

Bluetooth

Here is another way by which you can connect your camera to nearby devices wirelessly.

You can easily connect with other Bluetooth enabled devices nearby and transfer files quickly.

RAW Support

When you hear a picture was taken in the RAW format, what comes to your mind? Untouched? Well, yes! That’s pretty much what the RAW format is.

Your camera having RAW support means you are presented with the option of having your images in their untouched, uncompressed forms.

And, as you must have guessed, this means that your images will be having more detail than if they were in the compressed JPEG format.

This is good news for you if you will be needing to use your images on pretty large scales, because, in those cases, every detail needs to be captured – and that’s exactly what the RAW format does for you.

Microphone Jack

A microphone jack is a feature that allows you to connect an external microphone to your camera and get better audio.

Now, your camera has an internal microphone that is able to produce good enough sound.

But in some cases – like when you are shooting in a really noisy environment – it might not do a great job.

In such cases, what you need is an external microphone connected to the microphone jack of your camera.

With that, you will be able to get more advanced audio quality on your recordings.

Not every camera comes with this feature, though. But with either of these cameras – Canon EOS M5 vs M50 – you will be able to connect an external microphone and get better audio quality on your recordings.

Time-Lapse Recording

This is a feature that lets you play around with time a little, in your recordings.

So, you could record a one hour video, for example, and with time-lapse, it could be made into a 10-minute video.

This is a lovely and really creative feature, especially used by nature photographers.

Sunrise, sunset, blossoming of a flower, movement of stars; these types of things are better captured in a time-lapse video.

Well, in case you do not know what a time-lapse video looks like, here is one of – pretty much – the life span of a sunflower. Check it out!

HDMI Output

This means that you can connect an HDMI cord to your camera, and then to a monitor and, thus, view your images on a larger screen.

Near Field Communication (NFC)

Anyway, you will only be enjoying this extra convenience with the Canon EOS M5, as of the two cameras in comparison – Canon EOS M5 vs M50 – only it comes with this feature.

Video Stabilization

This is a feature that helps remove (or reduce) the effects that shaking your camera while recording can have on your videos.

This is a great feature for you if you are an events photographer, or – for whatever reason – you will be making a lot of video recordings with camera in hand.

It is really difficult – sometimes impossible – for you to stop your hand from shaking, and thus, your camera.

These movements, as little as they might be, can cause your videos to look really untidy and unprofessional.

But with this feature, those effects are minimized. Anyway, you only get this feature on the Canon EOS M5.

Slow Motion

Being able to record videos in slow motion helps you to be more creative with your photography.

This camera seems to have received accolades for its articulating screen that tilts upward and downward to help you get great images from difficult angles.

Our Take — Canon EOS M5 Vs M50

Canon EOS M5

Canon EOS M50

First of all, great job Canon. We like that this camera is portable, has a pretty good grip, and a touch screen. It is convenient, and just so easy to get used to. We also like that with the EOS M5, you will be able to take really good selfies. This is another great and really functional camera. Pretty impressive burst mode, great focusing, and a great camera with which to take photos from difficult angles. It is also pretty lightweight which makes it just great for vacationing.
However, we are largely unimpressed by the battery of this camera. 295 shots is really disappointing.  Also, we do not like that this camera has no weather sealing – we really wish it did. The complaints we have about the battery of this camera is pretty much the same as the Canon EOS M5, just that at 235 shots per full charge, the battery of this camera is even more disappointing. Also, no weather sealing here, not exciting.
In all, we think this is a great camera, though. It is easy to use, has really nice features, and great functions, too. Finally, we sure can say we like this camera. A lot could have been better, but Canon has to be commended for giving us the Canon EOS M50.
