Canon EOS Rebel T5 vs T5i – Comparison Overview

These cameras – Canon EOS Rebel T5 vs T5i – are made by the same company, and even belong in the same series, so, they are expected to be similar. Well, yes, they are. But they also differ in a couple of ways, and we will be talking about some of those ways here now.

The Canon EOS Rebel T5 (also called the Canon 1200D) is the lighter camera of the two. This camera weighs a hundred grams less than the Canon EOS Rebel T5i (also called the Canon 700D), and thus, is the more convenient one to carry around for events and activities.

To further buttress its convenience for such activities, the T5 has a longer-lasting battery than the T5i, and because of this, it is, again, the better one to take along with you for events and all sorts, as it enables you to take more photos per full charge than its counterpart.

However, when it comes to convenience in shooting, the Canon EOS T5i is easily the better one of the two. This camera is the only one with a touch-sensitive, articulating screen. This makes it a good selfie camera, and an easy one to use at that.

It also is the one that will be giving you better results in low light. It has a wider ISO range than the T5, and is the only one with a PC sync port for flash. In addition to that, its screen resolution is amazing, too. As a matter of fact, the screen resolution of this camera is 126 percent higher than that of the Canon EOS Rebel T5. Wow!

Canon EOS Rebel T5 vs T5i – Common Features

The Canon EOS Rebel T5 and T5i camera have the following things in common:

i. DSLR camera

ii. Entry-level camera

iii. Optical viewfinder

iv. Face detection focus

v. RAW support

vi. Built-in flash

vii. External flash hot shoe

viii. Auto exposure bracketing

ix. HDMI output

DSLR Camera

A DSLR camera is a camera that is made with a mirror mechanism and comes with an optical viewfinder. In a typical DSLR (otherwise called mirrored) camera, light is sent from the camera’s lens to the mirrors, which then bounces it to the optical viewfinder.

Now, the optical viewfinder is where images are framed before a picture is taken. Optical viewfinders are unique to DSLR cameras, and they give you the actual image that the camera’s lens is seeing. Generally, this feature gives you more control of your shoot, and it helps you shoot conveniently, even in direct sunlight.

DSLR cameras are known to have bulky bodies, because of their mirror mechanism. And compared to their eternal rivals – mirrorless cameras – they come with longer-lasting batteries and faster autofocus.

Another fundamental similarity between these cameras is that they are both entry-level cameras, too. So, now, what is an entry-level camera?

Entry-level Camera

An entry-level camera is one that is made primarily for beginners and amateur photographers. Basically, an entry-level camera is made to be uncomplicated and generally very user friendly, so that even people without any experience with cameras will be able to use it without much hassle.

If you are looking to launch your photography career, or you need something you could use for vacations, or just personal use, then your best bet would be an entry-level camera. It is most likely to be affordable, easy to use, and lightweight, too; just what you would need if you fall into any of those categories.

Now that we are all on the same page on what DSLR and entry-level cameras are, we guess we can now go on to examine those features that come with both these cameras. And of course, we will begin with one we have already mentioned in this section.

Optical Viewfinder

We have already talked about an optical viewfinder, so, you already know what it is, and you sure can also see that having this on your camera is really a big plus.

In direct sunlight, it would be very difficult to shoot without a viewfinder. This is because when very bright light hits the camera’s LCD screen, it would be nearly impossible to see what is on it, and consequently, pretty much impossible to go ahead shooting with it. But well, with either of these cameras, you won’t have to bother about that at all; you can very easily shoot using the optical viewfinder, and not bother about sunlight.

Face Detection Focus

Each of these cameras – Canon EOS Rebel T5 vs T5i – will be giving you awesome results in portrait photography, and that is all thanks to this feature; face detection focus.

Face detection focus is the feature that enables your camera identify and focus on the human faces in its frame. This is the feature that will be helping you get all the detailing on the faces and, therefore, produce sharp and amazing portrait photos.

RAW Support

This feature is one which gives you an option of taking photos and having them store with their maximum quality intact.

Usually, when you take photos, your camera would compress them to the JPEG format, so that they don’t occupy too much storage space. However, one important thing to note is that when a photo is compressed, its quality is greatly reduced.

Now, with RAW support, you can decide to not compress your photos, and as such, preserve their maximum quality. If you would ever need to use your images on very large scales, you would have to shoot in the RAW format, because, in that case, every single detail would be needed.

Built-in Flash

A built-in flash is one pretty important feature for you if you hope to use your camera outside a studio. In your photo studio, you might have all the awesome lights and flashes, and so, wouldn’t need any other form of lighting from your camera.

But now, imagine having to shoot at an event where the lights are really low. To get nice shots in such conditions, you would have to get some form of lighting from your camera. And well, with each of these cameras – Canon EOS Rebel T5 vs T5i – you won’t have to look too far, because they each come with a built-in flash.

So, what if the in-built flash does not still give you the results you were looking forward to? Well, there is still no need to panic.

External Flash Hot Shoe

This is the other (more advanced) option you have to get bright images in low light. So, if the built-in flash does not give you the results you hoped for, you could very easily better your results with an external flash.

An external flash hot shoe is a feature that sits just atop the camera’s screen. It is what indicates that the camera is compatible with an external flash, and it is, in fact, where the external flash would be mounted.

So, essentially, if you would be shooting a lot in low light conditions, shooting with either one of these cameras – Canon EOS Rebel T5 vs T5i – won’t be a problem at all.

Furthermore, if you will be doing flash photography, this is a feature you will be very grateful for, because it will be giving you really amazing results; even better than what you would have been able to get with just the built-in flash.

Auto Exposure Bracketing

This feature is one that helps you shoot in complicated lighting conditions. For example, when a part of the scene is too bright, and another is too dark, it might be difficult for you to determine what setting would be producing the best results for you. In such cases, it would be more convenient – and even more efficient – for you to shoot using auto exposure bracketing.

Auto exposure bracketing is what helps you get a number of shots of a scene with just one click of a button. Now, the good thing is that each of those shots that will be taken will have a different exposure setting. So, you could, for instance, click the shutter button just once, and auto exposure bracketing will show you an under exposed, normally exposed, and over exposed pictures of that scene.

Furthermore, this feature will be helping you get great HDR photos, and it is easy to use, too. Anyway, if you would like to see how easy it is to use, then check out the video below. This video shows you how to set up auto exposure bracketing on a Canon camera, and how you can get great results with this feature. Watch it here!

HDMI Output

An HDMI output on your camera simply indicates that you will be able connect your camera to a television screen with the use of an HDMI cable. Being able to do this makes it extra easy for you to show your camera’s images to a large number of people. And of course, this is something you will be able to achieve with any one of these cameras in comparison today – Canon EOS Rebel T5 vs T5i.

Canon EOS Rebel T5 vs T5i – Unique Features

The following features distinguish the Canon EOS Rebel T5 from the T5i:

i. Touch screen

ii. Articulating screen

iii. External microphone jack

iv. PC sync port for flash

Touch Screen

A touch screen is one feature you must already be very conversant with. Virtually every device in circulation right now has touch screen versions; smartphones, tablets, laptops, even refrigerators now come with touch screens.

You see, a device (or appliance) with a touch-sensitive screen is one that is easy to use because you would not have to go about looking for the right buttons to press, you would be able to access the features and functions of that device just by tapping on the screen.

All of these apply to cameras, too. A touch screen camera is generally easier to control than one without a touch screen. So, perhaps we could say that the presence of a touch screen in the Canon EOS Rebel T5i gives you some advantages over the T5, which does not have a touch screen.

Articulating Screen

So, not only is the screen of the Canon EOS Rebel T5i touch sensitive, it is also flexible. The screen of this camera can be tilted and flipped to different angles, and this is so that you will be able to shoot more conveniently with this camera, from whatever angle.

So, whether you have to take shots from over your head, chest level, low angles, you will be able to do just that without much stress. In addition to that, if you want to take selfies, the articulating screen of the Canon EOS Rebel T5i was designed for that, too. All you would need to do is just flip the screen and go ahead to take as many selfies as you would like.

External Microphone Jack

If you plan to record video and audio with your camera, then this is a feature that is likely to strongly affect your decision. The external microphone jack is a feature that indicates that your camera is compatible with an external microphone.

Now, when you record audio with your camera, the internal microphone, no matter how amazing it is, will not always give you the best of sound; especially is a very noisy environment. Well, in such cases, you will still be able to get amazing audio just by attaching an external microphone to the camera via the external microphone jack.

An external microphone will be giving you more superior audio and better noise cancellation than the camera’s internal microphone. And well, this is something you will only be able to get with the Canon EOS Rebel T5i, as it is the only one of the two cameras – Canon EOS Rebel T5 vs T5i – that has an external microphone jack.

PC Sync Port for Flash

This feature is not very popular, so, this might even be your first hearing of it. Anyway, this is one feature that allows you to connect an external flash (one different from the regular external flash we discussed earlier) to your camera.

The flashes that use the PC sync port offer a couple of advantages over the regular external flash, and one of them is that they give better and brighter lighting. So, generally, if you would be doing a lot of flash photography, then the PC sync port is a feature you would love to use.

Yes, the regular external flash will be producing bright images even in low light, but the flashes which connect to the PC sync port will be producing even brighter images.

Anyway, this is a feature you only get with the Canon EOS Rebel T5i, therefore, all these extra advantages are only accessible on this camera.

Canon EOS Rebel T5 vs T5i – Unique Cons

Canon EOS Rebel T5 vs T5i – Unique Cons Of The Canon EOS Rebel T5

The following are the disadvantages of choosing the Canon EOS T5 over the T5i:

i. No articulating screen

ii. No touch screen

iii. No external microphone jack

iv. Slow burst mode speed

No Articulating Screen

The Canon EOS Rebel T5 does not have an articulating screen, and as a result, this is not the best camera for vlogging.

The LCD screen of the T5 is fixed, and as such, you won’t be able to rotate it to get shots from difficult angles. You also won’t be able to flip this one up to take selfies or make vlogging videos. Therefore, you might not exactly love this camera if you are a YouTuber or a vlogger.

No Touch Screen

Now, not only is the LCD screen of the Canon EOS Rebel T5i fixed, but it is also not touch-sensitive. What this means is that you won’t be able to control this camera by tapping on the screen.

Earlier in this Canon EOS Rebel T5 vs T5i comparison article, we talked about a couple of ways a touch screen makes a camera easy to operate. So, it is safe to say that you will be missing out on those conveniences and advantages with the T5. Also, considering that this camera is an entry-level one, the lack of a touch screen would be even more felt.

No External Microphone Jack

Recording video (and audio) is one thing you might have to do a couple of times with your camera. But unlike the Canon EOS Rebel T5i, the T5 will not be allowing you to enhance the audio quality beyond what an internal microphone offers.

This camera does not have an external microphone jack, so, if you are not satisfied with the quality of audio the internal microphone is producing, you, sadly, won’t be able to enhance it any further.

Slow Burst Mode

The Canon EOS Rebel T5 can only boast of a 3 frames per second speed on burst mode, and that is not very fast, even for an entry-level camera. With this camera, you might not be getting the best shots of moving objects or people.

Canon EOS Rebel T5 vs T5i – Unique Cons Of The Canon EOS Rebel T5i

Not Lightweight

For an entry-level camera, the Canon EOS Rebel T5i is not as lightweight as one would have expected. This camera weighs close to 600 grams, and is not the best one to carry around with you. Perhaps this is a bit forgivable because the T5i is a DSLR camera, but well the T5 is also a DSLR camera, and it does not weigh as much as the T5.

Canon EOS Rebel T5 vs T5i – Common Cons

Canon EOS Rebel T5

Canon EOS Rebel T5i

No built-in Wi-Fi Transferring files from your camera to a device over a wireless connection is one of the easiest ways to do it. And well, a built-in Wi-Fi is one of the major ways by which that can be achieved. However, seeing as this camera does not have a built-in Wi-Fi, it means it is would be impossible for you to create a wireless connection with another device. The absence of a built-in Wi-Fi in this camera also means that you will be missing out on the ease and convenience of transferring files to nearby devices via Wi-Fi.
No near field communication (NFC) Near field communication is a feature that helps you connect your camera to a nearby compatible device with only a touch of a button.
But now, the Canon EOS Rebel T5 also does not come with NFC – as one would have expected, because it first does not have a built-in Wi-Fi – so, yet again, you will miss out on this super convenient way of transferring files.
Just like the Canon EOS Rebel T5, this camera does not come with NFC. Therefore, it will be impossible for you to create a wireless connection with only a touch of a button.
No built-in Bluetooth This is another medium of wireless connection that you will be missing out on with the Canon EOS Rebel T5.
This camera does not come with a built-in Bluetooth, and seeing as we have already established that it also does not come with a built-in Wi-Fi, it is safe to say that you will not be able to transfer files from this camera to another device over any wireless connection whatsoever.
The Canon EOS Rebel T5i also does not come with a built-in Bluetooth. Therefore, you won’t be able to create a wireless connection with this camera, too. So, basically, you will be stuck with using USB cables.
No remote controlling The remote control function is one which lets you connect a smart device to your camera, and with that device, control the camera, even if you are meters away from it.
Anyway, you won’t be able to do that with this camera, and that is principally because this one does not have a means by which it can be wirelessly connected to the device.
You also will not be able have a smart device function as a remote controlling device for the Canon EOS Rebel T5i.
No top LCD screen The Canon EOS Rebel T5 does not have a top deck LCD screen on which settings being made on it can be viewed and monitored. This means that you won’t be able to monitor your camera’s settings as easily as it would have been if it had a top LCD screen. The Canon EOS Rebel T5i also does not have a top LCD screen, so, you also will be missing out on the extra convenience in monitoring this camera’s settings.
No GPS This camera does not come with a built-in GPS, and as such, you won’t be able to geo tag your images with this one. Same as the Canon EOS Rebel T5.
No image stabilization If this camera shakes while you take pictures with it, your pictures will very likely come out looking poor. This is because the Canon EOS Rebel T5 does not come with the feature – image stabilization – that helps erase or minimize those effects. The Canon EOS Rebel T5i also does not have image stabilization, so, if it shakes, your picture might come out looking blurry and unprofessional.
No slow motion You will not be able to record slow motion videos with the Canon EOS Rebel T5. You also will not be able to record slow motion videos with this camera.

Canon EOS Rebel T5 vs T5i – Our Take

Canon EOS Rebel T5

Canon EOS Rebel T5i

The Canon EOS Rebel T5 is a really good entry-level camera; big ups to Canon for this one. The Canon EOS Rebel T5i, just like the T5, is a functional camera. Anyway, we do think that this is even more functional, and even easier to use.
Another thing we love about this camera is the battery capacity. You will be able to get up to 500 shots per full charge of this camera’s battery, and that is very impressive for an entry-level camera.

Also, you will be getting good HDR photos, good flash photography, and good control of your all round shooting with this camera.   We would recommend this camera for vacationing, and for any sort of amateur photography.
The Canon EOS Rebel T5i does remarkably well in low light, in continuous shooting, and in audio/video recording. Also, with a touch screen, it is super easy to use and will be giving you great results with minimal effort.

We would recommend this camera for amateur sports photography, vlogging, and other types of video and audio recording.

Summarily, in this comparison today, we think that the Canon EOS Rebel T5i is the better camera, and also the one with the better price-value ratio. Basically, in our opinion, the better bargain for you today would be the T5i.

Is the Canon T5i Good for Photography?

The Canon T5i is exquisitely designed to deliver high-quality photos and videos. Its articulated touch screen helps photographers to get a clear preview of a picture before it is taken. In the T5i, Canon modified the default settings to make still-photos less ambiguous. With the ISO 6400 rating of this camera, JPEGs look breath-taking. The ISO can be downscaled to make images clearer and sharper.
